Jordan’s Economic Chamber: Jurisdiction, Case Types and Procedure
Learn which disputes fall within Jordan’s Economic Chamber and what financial and territorial limits should be checked before filing.
What is Jordan’s Economic Chamber?
The Economic Chamber is a specialized formation within Jordan’s regular courts, Under the Courts Formation Law and its amendments, it handles specified commercial, financial and investment disputes, The Jordanian Judicial Council describes a central chamber at the Amman Court of First Instance, a chamber at the Amman Court of Appeal, and a designated judicial panel at the Court of Cassation for matters within its jurisdiction.
A dispute does not fall within the chamber merely because it is described as commercial or economic, Its subject, legal basis, claim value and territorial scope must match the categories set by law.
What types of cases can it hear?
The jurisdiction includes categories with nationwide territorial scope and other claims assigned to the Amman Court of First Instance, The Judicial Council lists, among others:
Claims with nationwide scope
These include claims concerning anti-monopoly rules and protection of national production; maritime trade and marine insurance disputes; and claims arising from contracts involving the government or official or public institutions when the claim exceeds JOD 250,000.
Claims assigned to Amman’s Court of First Instance
These include construction and building-contract claims exceeding JOD 100,000, and banking claims above that threshold, including documentary credits, letters of guarantee and bank guarantees, Insurance and reinsurance claims exceeding JOD 100,000 are also listed.
Other categories include claims under the Commercial Agents and Brokers Law, disputes among shareholders or partners in registered companies, securities disputes, and bankruptcy and liquidation matters, The Judicial Council also identifies certain government or commercial contract disputes where the parties agree to refer the dispute to the chamber.
How is the competent court determined?
Start by identifying the legal relationship and the law supporting the claim, then check the claim value, territorial jurisdiction and any contractual referral clause, The stated thresholds concern the claim value as determined under the applicable law; whether a threshold is met requires review of the specific claims and facts.
Some categories—such as shareholder disputes or claims under the Commercial Agents and Brokers Law—have a distinct jurisdictional basis and are not necessarily subject to the financial thresholds that apply to other categories.
What should be prepared before filing?
There is no single procedure for every economic dispute, The filing follows the applicable civil procedure rules and any special legislation, A well-organized file may include the contract or articles of association, correspondence, invoices or account statements, relevant decisions, and documents supporting the claim value and any alleged loss.
Accounting records, expert reports and technical documentation may be important in construction and banking disputes, Interim or urgent applications remain subject to their legal requirements and must be brought before the competent court; describing a dispute as economic does not automatically make such an application admissible.
Review subject-matter, value and territorial jurisdiction, court fees, deadlines and evidence requirements before filing, The procedural position may vary with the contract, facts and applicable law.
Does the Economic Chamber guarantee faster proceedings?
Specialization aims to build experience in complex economic disputes, but it does not guarantee that every case will be resolved within a fixed period, Duration depends on the dispute’s complexity, number of parties, evidence, expert work, defences, appeals and required procedures.
When is legal representation useful?
Legal review can be especially important when jurisdiction depends on the claim value or contract type, when a referral clause exists, or when a case concerns shareholders, bank records or technical accounts, A lawyer can help assess jurisdiction, organize claims and evidence, and follow expert proceedings, defences and appeals under the law.
This article provides general information, not advice on a specific case, The competent court and outcome depend on the facts, relief sought and applicable legislation.
Jurisdiction of Jordan’s Economic Chamber depends on the dispute category, claim value, territorial scope and legal basis, Check these elements and the supporting documents before filing rather than relying only on the label “commercial dispute.”
